Royal Painter

Diego Velasquez at the age of 24 painted a portrait of King Philip IV from this he became a patron to Diego's art. He was able to gain this esteem through another who was chaplain to the King. This painting was created in a day and not more than a sketch but was loved by the king. He lived in Madrid as the court painter. The king would not allow anyone but Velasquez to paint his portrait and all other paintings of him were removed.
