Painting Skill
Diego Velasquez took landscapes, mythological and religious scenes and created them as common life. The artist mastered the look of worn, hard working lives and depicted his paintings true to life. Velasquez was a master realist. His subjects seemed to breathe and move. They contained such realism the viewer felt their life in the paintings.
Velasquez demonstrated great skill in merging color, light, space, mass and rhythm of line with equal value. What are these? He also learned and new the subtleness of black and neutrals.
The details he creates in the Waterseller of Seville to the left shows Velasquez' amazing ability to humanize people in his paintings. The details with the rip of his sleeve and the faded man in the background are additions to the painting that take it to a new place.
What other things in the paintings to the left do you notice that is different and unique for this time period? I mean what looks like something you do not see a lot or before as you've been doing these hyperdocs.
