Georges Seurat was born into a very wealthy Parisian family. He opened a studio after he served his country for a year in the military. Seurat did not have any contact with his family.

When he began, his pieces focused on black and white drawing. He turned away from large salons when he was rejected for his first piece and only worked with independent artists of Paris forming their own society.
