Kinetic Sculptures

Calder began experimenting with Abstract art in 1930. This progressed into him introducing moving parts into his sculptures. These moving parts are called mobiles. What does kinetic mean? Give an example of another mobile? Alexander Calder invented mobiles. The parts that did not move are called stabiles.

From mobiles, Calder expanded to creating towers. Towers are wall mobiles. He also began adding sound to his mobiles and these are called gongs.

Impressively one of these mobiles from Calder hangs in the campus art museum of Ball State University. Go online and submit a photo of this mobile from Ball State in Google Classroom.
