Designs

Consisted of four broad styles.

First appeared around 1000 BCE and used simple shapes. This style was called Proto-Geometric Pottery. In this style, the center of gravity for the vase is downward and makes the vase more stable. The most popular design was precisely painted circles, semi-circles or horizontal lines. Large areas of the vases were painted in black.

The second style was Geometric from around 900 BCE. This style stayed mostly within the main body of the vase between the handles. It consisted of bold linear lines with the bottom separated by horizontal lines and the bottom painted in a solid black. Later it began to utilize stylized human figures and animals.

The final style was called Black-Figure Pottery. This style dominated for 150 years. Not all figures were painted black, but adaptations began for the female figure and clothing. More so during this time details became more prominent and added with sharp instruments.
