Notice how DaVinci creates his portrait coming out of the paper. Nothing is drawn, everything is shaded into the paper. It looks as if it is emerging from the paper.

Leonardo DaVinci created the technique sfumato which means blending of tones. This is what you see occurring in his self-portrait.
