Religious Painter
Diego Velasquez referenced religious scenes in a few of his paintings. When he used religious subjects, he took a different approach to them. The people in the scene are shown as peasants and low society individuals. Bacchus the god of wine is shown with men in ripped clothing and who look worn by time. Typically the people in paintings of this time period are from higher society or visually appear to be even in religious scenes.
What other artist have we studied shows the real side of life in his work instead of making it more visually pleasing?
