Bizen

Bizen pottery is traditionally from the Bizen province in Japan. In 1982, this was designated as a traditional Japanese craft by the government.

It is characterized by is significant hardness due to its high level of fire temperature. It is typically absent of glaze and is made of red earthenware clay. It will have residue of ash burnt in from the ash of the burnt wood kiln method used to fire it. Most of these vessels are made on a potter's wheel.

Research and find what determines the finish of the fired Bizen pottery. What colors can these vessels change throughout the firing? What two flame factors affect the clay piece?
