Edward Hopper's work contains individuals deep in thought. This is thought to be intentionally deeply emotional. He uses the interior spaces with artificial light and great composition emphasizes the subject's inner lives.

Hopper was influenced by Degas' dancers. He is inspired by the fleeting moments Degas creates.

Hopper's compositions combined with the contrast of dark versus bright lighting emphasize the emotions and the space the piece is taking place.

Through these spaces, lighting and subjects, Hopper creates a narrative in which he wants the viewer to complete.
