Legends of
the Painting

The mural has gone through many trials and destruction. In 1652, a door was cut through the center and later re-bricked.

Refectory used as armory for French troops. The troops scratched out eyes and threw stones at the piece.

Later it was a prison.

In 1821, for restoration it was attempted to remove it from the wall but failed. In doing so, some of the mural was destroyed.

In 1943, the mural was sandbagged in attempts to protect it during WWII from the shaking of the walls during the bombings. This rubbed and damaged it as well.

Finally restored from 1978 - 1999 but not fully back to it's original state.

Name one of the damages to the mural you can obviously see.
