Mona Lisa
Leonardo da Vinci;
Mona Lisa;
1478; oil on wood
Mona Lisa is DaVinci's most famous artwork. You would be shocked at the size. It's a bit disappointing in real life. This painting hangs in Louvre.
The top Mona Lisa on the right is what it looks like today. The bottom is the original, larger, Mona Lisa before the years were bad to it.
Painted on Poplar wood, which will obviously weather, rot and age. The two columns, one on the left the other one on the right side of Mona Lisa, have been cut due to deterioration. That is the reason why it is not easy to recognize that Mona Lisa is sitting on a terrace. Some portions have even been painted over through the years. During restoration the bottom half was destroyed in 1956 and had to be trimmed. This painting has been stolen and took 2 years to recover.
Mona Lisa is a commissioned painting of the Noblest citizen of Florence’s wife Lisa di Antonio Maria di Noldo Gherardini. DaVinci began painting it in 1503 when she was 23 and finished it 1507. He refused to sell it to the couple because he loved the painting so much.
Mona Lisa looks at the viewer and stares at you. Composed on a triangular system used to keep the viewer engaged in the painting.
